AL-EYE'S VISION
To transform mixed reality headsets into powerful aids for individuals with low vision, hearing loss, or motor disabilities. By developing and testing personalized solutions, we strive to create ‘universal disability aids’ that provide multisensory support individualised for each user.

about us

The AL-EYE project is developing software that turns mixed reality headsets with eye tracking into disability aids for people with low vision, hearing loss, or motor disability. Our first prototypes were of individual visual aids, designed to improve visual perception. To realise this, we have built calibration methods for tracking the eye of low vision users, tests of the visual field, simulations of low vision based on real users, and an individualised visual aid with tools and features to improve everyday life for those who need it. AL-EYE is currently funded by Innovation Fund Denmark.

WHY VISION AIDS

  • Prevalence of low vision, lack of individualisation
  • Specialist hardware pushing price
  • Lack of multisensory support, eye tracking in current vision aids
  • Current solutions don’t work for many

The AL-EYE solution:
Eye tracking enabled visual aid from XR devices, for real and virtual worlds, individualised support for each eye.

Multi-sensory
support

We are multisensory beings. Our senses work together to perceive the world, and are not independent. Loss of one sense often leads to greater reliance on other senses. Support the individual both in terms of their sensory weaknesses, and their strengths.

Universal Design

Advancing XR for Accessibility
By solving problems for people with sensory and motor disabilities, we push XR technologies state of the art, incorporating the neuroscience of visual and auditory perception, attention, and methods from signal processing, optics, and machine learning into the pipeline.
Universal Access for All Users
All users are disabled to some degree at various times - either temporarily due to circumstances such as poor light conditions, or not having hands free to interact, or more long term due to age related hearing or vision loss. There are many situations when alternative access or control methods and sensory support benefits everyone.
Inclusive by Design
By focusing on universal design, including users with disabilities in the design process from day 1, and availing of an existing ethical and regulatory framework for the development of assistive devices, we aim to push state of the art of extended reality technologies for good.

Our team

We are a diverse team of experts in neuroscience, human-computer interaction, and XR, dedicated to advancing technologies for universal accessibility.
